Wallingford blaze under control, N 45th still closed

A fire in the 1600 block of North 45th Street shut down both east- and westbound traffic on North 45th. The fire started shortly after 6 p.m. The first firefighters on the scene reported flames were more than 100 feet above the building. (Greg Gilbert/The Seattle Times)

UPDATE: The fire is under control.

Lt. Sue Stangle, spokeswoman for Seattle Fire Department, said the fire started in a house behind Kitaro Sushi at the corner of Densmore Avenue and North 45th Street.

When firefighters arrived, they saw flames and smoke, and the house was heavily involved. A woman, who was in the house when the fire started, had managed to escape, Stangle said.

Eighty-eight firefighters responded to the fire, she said.

The effort now is to check nearby buildings for fire.

North 45th Street is still closed in the area of the fire.
