Police have person of interest in Kirkland homicide

Kirkland police have identified a person of interest in yesterday’s slaying of a 19-year-old woman.

The person of interest is currently in custody in another jurisdiction on unrelated charges, police said. They are not releasing any other details on the individual.

The death of Scarlett Paxton was ruled a homicide today by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.┬áHer death was caused by “sharp forced injury to her neck,” according to the medical examiner’s office.

According to Kirkland police, the woman was found early yesterday morning outside her apartment by her 19-year-old boyfriend, who reportedly had gone for an early morning jog.

Even before the cause of death was released, neighbors said it was an obvious homicide. “This was a desperate struggle,” one neighbor, who did not want to be named, said today.

A trail of blood led from the Paxton’s apartment to a unit across the hall. The trail continued down the stairs to the doors of two other units.

One neighbor said he heard nothing because he sleeps while wearing headphones.

“I wish I had and that I’d been able to help her,” he said.

The eight-unit apartment complex called Hidden Firs is tucked away off a small road that leads between a Starbucks and a bank on 100th Avenue Northeast, behind an Albertson’s supermarket.

During a search of the apartment police found a knife, but it is not known whether it was used in the slaying.
