Man barricaded in home gets lost in own basement

An armed robbery suspect who barricaded himself in a south Seattle home surrendered to a Seattle SWAT team, but not before getting lost in his own darkened basement, according to police.

Police hostage negotiators eventually managed to guide him out, but only after considerable prompting, said Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt.

He suspect “wanted to surrender, but couldn’t find his way out,” she said.

The man was a suspect in a robbery several days ago in which shots had been fired, Witt said. East Patrol anti-crime investigators obtained information that he was holed up in a home near Columbian Way and 14th Avenue South, and a SWAT team responded to set up a perimeter, she said.

Once the team was in place, officers announced themselves about 10:30 p.m. The man apparently tried to hide, but got lost in the darkened downstairs. When he decided he wanted to surrender, Witt said, he couldn’t find his way out.

He didn’t surrender until just after midnight.
