Morning Memo/Monday: Auburn fire…stolen gifts…gas prices

Weather:   Partly cloudy today and a 40 percent chance of rain tomorrow, dang it. Ah, but Wednesday promises to be partly sunny. Last week we had days approaching 50 degrees. Not so much this week.  The details.

Traffic: The map and cams.

A fire in Auburn early this morning forced a woman to jump from a second story window to safety and three others inside got out safely, too, according to The Associated Press. The woman was not injured. The 2 a.m. fire destroyed the first floor, according to the Valley Regional Fire Authority.

Gas prices: The AAA auto club reports the average price of gasoline in Washington is $3.46.. That’s down seven cents in a week in the state but 24 cents higher than the national average.

Christmas cards stolen; Grandpa’s gifts to his grandchildren probably won’t get to them. The Kitsap Sun writes that a Port Orchard man who put $5 in Christmas cards and addressed them to his nine grandkids may have had them stolen from his mailbox. However, a neighbor may have caught the thief on video. Now there’s a strange story for you.

Diana McKune credits Treehouse for helping her prepare for college. "Without them, I wouldn't be where I am now," says McKune, 24, who is finishing a degree at Seattle University. An accident in June left McKune with internal injuries and in a wheelchair most of the time. (Photo by Erika Schultz / The Seattle Times)

One of the agencies that benefits from The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy is the nonprofit Treehouse for Kids. Each year it  serves some 5,000 foster children, working to give them as normal a life as possible by providing such things as tutoring, toys, school supplies, summer camp and ballet lessons.
