Peace Corps volunteer from Eastside dies in Mozambique

A Peace Corps volunteer from Washington state and another volunteer from Wisconsin were killed in a car crash in Mozambique Tuesday, according to the Peace Corps website.

Volunteer Elizabeth Alden Landis, 23, of Yarrow Point on the Eastside, and Lena Jenison, 22, of Hartland, Wis., died from injuries they suffered in the accident on Dec. 20, according to the Peace Corps. Mozambique is on Africa’s southeastern coast.

According to the Peace Corps website,  Landis graduated from Boston University last year, majoring in biochemistry-molecular biology, with a minor in French. She is survived by her parents and two sisters here in Washington.

The two volunteers, who had arrived in Mozambique in September, were sworn in just two weeks ago.
