Person hit by Amtrak train in Monroe

The Amtrak “Empire Builder” train hit a pedestrian on the tracks in Monroe Thursday evening.

The person was airlifted to a Seattle-area hospital, but no further information was immediately available, said Amtrak spokesman Steve Kulm.

The accident occurred at 6:05 p.m. as the train, bound for Chicago, hit a person near the Main Street crossing in downtown Monroe. The maximum speed on that section of track is 45 miles per hour, although Kulm said he did not know how fast the train was traveling.

The train carrying 189 passengers left Seattle at 4:40 p.m., but remained stuck at the accident scene until 10 p.m., when a replacement train engineer arrived to take over.
