The Morning Memo/Monday: Pearl Jam guitar stolen, gimme junk food, Occupy Seattle port blockade

Weather: COLD. Did you have to scrape ice off your windows this morning? Mighty foggy, too. Some folks reporting icy streets, so watch out driving into work. The good news: It’s expected to be sunny later in the day. Cloudy tomorrow and rain likely late on Wednesday and Thursday. Did we mention it’s getting close to the official start of winter? The details.

Stolen Pearl Jam guitar:  A classic Fender signed by members of our own Pearl Jam and given to a boy with a brain tumor was stolen, but recovered, but sans the signatures, according to The Associated Press. Read on.

Kids like junk food. Healthier food? Not so much. Read staff reporter Brian Rosenthal’s piece today on Seattle’s schools losing a lot of money serving healthful snacks in machines over not-so-healthful goods.

Walla Walla Community College students, faculty and administrators will be tuning in this morning to see if their college, a finalist for the inaugural Aspen Prize, is named the top community college in the nation.

The live webcast of the award ceremony in Washington, D.C., begins at 9:30 a.m. Pacific time and can be watched online.

The Aspen Institute will name the winner and four finalists with distinction who will share the $1 million prize
