Morning Memo/Wednesday: Train threat … cellphone ban … hello, blue whales

Weather: Let’s see, mostly cloudy today, light rain tomorrow, mostly cloudy Friday, partly cloudy Saturday and Sunday. Looks like a pattern to us. At least there wasn’t freezing fog and ice on the windshield for some folks this morning. How about you? The details.

Traffic: The map and the cams.

Patience is a virtue, right? A Bellingham man was put in the slammer the other day for getting so mad when a train blocked his way that he called 911 and threatened to blow it up, according to police. Police don’t think he had the means to do it, but still. The Bellingham Herald has the story.

Rank the top stories: At the end of each year, news organizations put on their thinking caps to come up with the top stories of the year. We’d like to hear what you think are the top local stories of 2011. You can have a say in our ranking by weighing random pairs of topics and deciding which was more important (or memorable, or interesting — use your own criteria).

Blue whales: The largest animals on Earth have been spotted off the Washington coast. The whales, which weigh up to 150 tons and reach 100 feet long, are endangered. It’s rare to see them in our neighborhood. We’ll have more on them down the road.

Cellphone ban: We asked readers overnight whether they supported the National Transportation Safety Board’s pronouncement that all cellphone use in cars should be banned. As of early this morning, more than 55 percent said they did. Cast your vote.

Paul Allen's Stratolaunch plans to use "the largest aircraft ever constructed" to carry a space rocket to an altitude of about 30,000 feet for an air launch into orbit. (Stratolaunch)

Big plane: We think the proposed plane that Paul Allen want to use to launch rockets into space is very cool so we thought we’d again run a rendering of the behemoth. It would be the biggest plane ever built.
