Child rapist suspected in attempted kidnap of Arlington girl, 12

A convicted child rapist is being held in the attempted kidnapping of a 12-year-old Arlington girl who escaped after the suspect allegedly attempted to pull her into a wooded area in the 18300 block of 31st Avenue Northeast early Sunday night, Arlington Police said.

The girl told police that a man grabbed her and attempted to pull her into the woods at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

“She made a big fuss, got out of the situation and told her parents,” who called police, said Arlington spokeswoman Kristin Banfield.

Police and a K-9 unit searched the area, but did not find anyone. Police are continuing their investigation, but Banfield said that a rapist in custody at Snohomish County Jail is a potential suspect.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to raping a 9-year-old boy in November 2003. He reportedly told authorities that he had exposed himself to and fondled boys and girls, according to the Washington state Sex Offender Registry. His other convictions include multiple assaults, burglary and theft.
