Man critically burned in Southeast Seattle fire

A man who may have been living in an abandoned house in South Seattle suffered life-threatening burns in a fire about 4:30 a.m. today.

Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore said a neighbor called the fire department at 4:36 a.m. after seeing smoke coming from the basement of a house in the 3600 block of South Graham Street.

As firefighters were putting the blaze out, a man who had suffered burns came out of an adjacent structure, Moore said. He said indications are the man had accidentally started a fire in a mattress in the abandoned house and got out of the house before firefighters arrived.

Moore said the man, in his mid-30s, suffered second- and third-degree burns covering about 50 percent of his body and isĀ in critical condition.
