Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said the shooting was outside a Starbucks along Southwest Dash Point Road around 1 p.m.

The officer, a 9-year-veteran of the department, was heading to the Starbucks for a break when she “noticed what she believed to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction” inside a car outside the coffee shop, Schrock said.

“She approached the vehicle … she made verbal commands for them to stop what they were doing, to show their hands and to get out of the car,” Schrock said.

In response to the officer’s commands one of the men in the car started reaching for something underneath the seat, Schrock said. The officer continued yelling for the men to stop what they were doing and to get out of the car. When the man continued reaching underneath the seat, the officer fired.

After being fired upon the car took off, Schrock said. The car was found abandoned at a nearby apartment complex; the driver was gone and the passenger was found dead inside the vehicle.

Police searched the area for the driver and have not found him. Both the driver and the passenger are described as white men in their 20s.

Auburn police will now handle the investigation, because a Federal Way officer was involved in the shooting. The officer involved previously worked at another local police agency, Schrock said. Her name has not been released.

Federal Way schools spokeswoman Diane Turner said that four schools were locked down because of the police activity. She said that students and the schools are not a part of the investigation.

Turner said that Adelaide Elementary, Decatur High School, Lakota Middle School and Twin Lakes Elementary were locked down. All of the lockdowns were lifted by 2:30 p.m.

We’ll update this story as more details become available.
