Two arrested in climb of Tacoma Narrows Bridge

A man and a woman were arrested on trespassing charges Sunday after hopping a fence and climbing the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the Washington State Patrol said.

The pair was half-way to the top of the bridge when a state trooper spotted them around 1:15 a.m., according to State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill.  They climbed back down after the trooper shined a spotlight toward them.

Equipped with backpacks and gloves, the pair told troopers they planned to climb to the top to take photos, Gill said.

Gill said the man is from Federal Way and the woman from Bothell. Both are in their late 20s or early 30s.

Gill said they’re lucky to be alive. “The chances of them surviving had they fallen from where they stopped would be very, very slim,” he said.
