The Russian tanker pushing through the frozen Bering Sea with 1.3 million gallons of fuel for the people of Nome, Alaska, is about 110 miles south of its destination.

Accompanied by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy, which is clearing the way, the tanker Renda is attempting an unprecedented winter delivery of fuel by sea after a severe storm blocked a fuel delivery scheduled earlier in the fall.

The Healy and the Renda began their journey from the Aleutian Islands on Jan. 4. They are expected to arrive in Nome on Thursday or Friday.
