2 UW vans crash in California; 4 students taken to hospitals

Four University of Washington students sustained moderate injuries and five others received minor injuries when two vans collided on a coastal California highway Friday afternoon, officials said.

The vans, each carrying 11 students and being driven by students, were traveling side by side southbound on Highway 101 near Bradley, Calif., when the van in the right lane veered into the left lane, ramming into the right side of the other, according to a collision report released by the California Highway Patrol.

The van that was struck then swerved back and forth before overturning on the shoulder, according to the report. Two students were ejected from that van.

Those two students were airlifted away from the scene, according to the report. Two other students were transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

One of the airlifted students was taken to Fresno Community Medical Center, said Joel Newby, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol. The others were taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, Calif.

The students who sustained minor injuries did not require hospital treatment.

Most of the students are in the UW’s business school, spokesman Norm Arkans said.

The students were on their way to a leadership seminar in Santa Maria, he said.
