Girl shot at Bremerton elementary still in critical condition

The 8-year-old girl accidentally shot Feb. 22 at Bremerton’s Armin Jahr Elementary school remains in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday.

Amina Kocer-Bowman has undergone several surgeries since the incident, including one on Sunday, to repair the damage caused by a .45-caliber bullet accidentally discharged from a gun in a boy’s backpack near the end of the school day. Another surgery is scheduled for Tuesday.

“We’re continuing to see improvement,” said hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg. “She’s got a long road to recovery.”

The bullet lodged near Amina’s spine. Doctors don’t think they will be able to remove it, at least not at this early stage in her recovery.

Prosecutors will seek probation and treatment for the 9-year-old boy who brought the gun to school.  They believe the boy got the gun while on a visit to his mother’s house during the weekend before the girl was shot. He told classmates he needed it for protection as part of a plan to run away from home.
