At least a dozen residents of a lower Queen Anne apartment building were displaced Friday morning by a fire in their building.

Seattle firefighters were dispatched to 684 W. Olympic Place near 8th Avenue West at 5:40 a.m., said Kyle Moore, a spokesman for the fire department.

“Flames were shooting from the second floor when we arrived,” Moore said.

Moore said fire has been deemed accidental; clothing was piled against a baseboard heater inside one of the units. The fire caused more than $400,000 worth of damage.

The American Red Cross has also been called in to assist the residents. At least two apartment units are uninhabitable, Moore said.

The fire was first discovered by two men in one apartment, Moore said. They noticed smoke and then saw flames in the living room of that apartment. The two men banged on the doors of all the other apartments to alert their neighbors, Moore said.

The apartment building is three stories and has at least six, maybe 12 units. The first floor is a parking garage, Moore said.

One firefighter also suffered a minor knee injury while he was pulling burning material from the building, Moore said.
