Arizona principal will lead new West Seattle elementary

A school turnaround specialist from Arizona will lead the new science-themed elementary school opening in West Seattle next year, the city’s public-school district announced Tuesday.

Dr. Shannon McKinney, currently the Turnaround Principal at Hohokam Middle School in the Tucson, will start the job in April, Seattle Public Schools Interim Superintendent Susan Enfield wrote in a letter to families.

The new school will focus on STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It will open next fall, where it will temporarily be housed at the Louisa Boren Building.

Until then, McKinney will work with families to develop a vision for the school, Enfield wrote.

“I selected Dr. McKinney not only for her STEM expertise and her demonstrated record of improved student achievement at the schools where she has been a leader, but also for her enthusiasm,” Enfield wrote. “She describes the opportunity to work collaboratively with families and staff to build a new school from the ground up as ‘a dream come true.'”

Families interested in the school can find out more at a family information and input night Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Schmitz Park Elementary, 5000 S.W.  Spokane St.

District officials are opening the school because of overcrowding at other nearby schools.
