City University acquires language school

Washington Academy of Languages, a nonprofit school that taught English and other languages to about 1,200 students last year, has been purchased by City University of  Seattle, a nonprofit university with a campus in Bellevue.

The language academy was founded 30 years ago by Paul Schneider and his wife  Sherry, said City University spokeswoman Tarsi Hall. It specializes in immersion learning, and has two locations in Seattle, at 2 Nickerson St. and at 2150 N. 107th St.

The language academy’s teachers will continue to teach there, and the school will remain at its two current locations until January. At that time, the language academy will move into City University’s new location at Sixth and Wall streets in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood.

Hall said City University, which serves about 3,500 students in Seattle and 8,000 worldwide, was getting requests by many of its students to offer language classes — especially from students who needed to learn a language for business communications.

About half the language academy’s students come there to learn English, and the other half are English speakers who want to learn another language, she said.
