Dozens of Puget Sound schools earn state recognition

Apparently there’s a lot of achievement going on in Washington state.

The 2011 Washington Achievement Awards, announced Tuesday by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education, honored a whopping 186 schools across the state. The list includes 21 in Seattle, 14 in Lake Washington, 12 in Everett and several others around the Puget Sound.

The main award, overall excellence, goes to the top 5 percent of elementary, middle, high and comprehensive schools according to test scores on a two-year rolling average. Additional honors are awarded for performance in language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate, improvement and closing achievement gaps, again according to two-year averages.

The big winners in Seattle are Beacon Hill’s Mercer Middle School (winning an overall excellence award and special recognition in math and science) and West Seattle’s Madison Middle School (overall excellence and special recognition in science and improvement).

A full list of Seattle winners is here.
