Performance inspired by labor uprising debuts at ACT Theatre

By Seattle Times arts staff

A song cycle inspired by an infamous, and deadly, labor uprising in Everett makes its debut at ACT Theatre on Thursday.

In “Smokestack Arias,” by local musicians Wayne Horvitz and Robin Holcomb, each song assumes the perspective of a different woman affected by the strike and the deaths of sheriff’s deputies and protesters in a shootout at the Everett waterfront in 1916.

The production uses just two performers — pianist Cristina Valdes and soprano Maria Mannisto. Experimental theater artist and choreographer Dayna Hanson directs.

Weekends through Feb. 12, ACT Theatre, 700 Union St., !Seattle; $15-$22 (www.acttheatre.org).
