Amina Kocer-Bowman, the 8-year-old girl accidentally shot by a gun brought to school by a 9-year-old classmate at a Bremerton elementary School last week, has grown more stable since her arrival at Harborview Medical Center on Feb. 22, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.

After a fifth surgery Tuesday morning, doctors upgraded Amina’s condition to serious. She had been in critical condition since she arrived with life-threatening injuries from a .45-caliber bullet that struck her in the abdomen and arm.

Amina is still in the intensive care unit, said hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg. She has progressed and become more stable since her arrival, Gregg said.

Prosecutors will seek probation and treatment for the boy who brought the gun to Armin Jahr Elementary.  They believe he obtained the weapon while on a visit to his mother’s house during the weekend before the girl was shot. He told classmates he needed it for protection as part of a plan to run away from home.
