Stolen propeller slated for Seattle park found in Kent
A big, stainless steel propeller that was stolen Tuesday before it could be installed in a Seattle park was recovered at a Kent business park early this morning.
A security guard at the Northwest Corporate Park found the 1,200-pound propeller attached by a tow strap to a tree. He’d heard about the theft on the news and called Kent police, according to the Seattle Parks Department.
The University District Community Council and Philip Thiel, a naval architect and University of Washington professor emeritus, were preparing to donate the propeller to North Passage Point Park along the ship canal when thieves drove up the alley behind Thiel’s house in the University District, scaled a retaining wall and a fence, and hoisted the propeller onto a truck.
The propeller had been awaiting a decision by the city about an appropriate location for installation. It is now in the custody of the Parks Department.
