UW students injured in California van crash released from hospital

Four University of Washington students who were hospitalized last week after a traffic accident on a coastal California highway have been released from the hospital with plans to return to Seattle.

UW spokesman Norm Arkans said that three of the four drove back to Seattle on Monday. The fourth injured student was scheduled to fly back on Tuesday, he said.

Two vans, each carrying 11 students and being driven by students, were traveling side by side southbound on Highway 101 near Bradley, Calif., when the van in the right lane veered into the left lane, ramming into the right side of the other, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The van that was struck then swerved back and forth before overturning on the shoulder, the report says. Two students were ejected from that van. Four students were hospitalized and another five received minor injuries, authorities said.

Most of the students are in the UW’s business school, Arkans said. The students were on their way to a leadership seminar in Santa Maria.
