Volleyball coach pleads not guilty to attempted child rape

Youth volleyball coach Ronald Swafford pleaded not guilty this morning to charges of attempted child rape and communication with a minor for immoral purposes in King County Superior Court.

Swafford, 58, of Mill Creek, was arrested Feb. 3 after he allegedly solicited sex over the Internet from a person he believed was a 13-year-old girl, according to charging documents. It turns out he was talking to a detective with the Seattle Police Department, the charges say.

Swafford is the president of the Snohomish County Board of Volleyball Officials, which helps coordinate referees for high-school games in Snohomish County. He also coached the Northshore Juniors club volleyball team. The club’s director fired Swafford after learning of his arrest.

Swafford is being held in lieu of $300,00 bail. His next court hearing is scheduled for March 6, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
