WA prison guards say inmate-made uniforms poor

The Associated Press

Washington prison guards unhappy with the quality of their uniforms are asking state lawmakers to force inmate tailors to shape up or lose their jobs.

The state House passed a bill over the weekend that would fire inmates for making ill-fitting uniforms or outsource the work if it remains substandard.

The Daily Herald reports (http://is.gd/QkjASn ) uniforms are now provided free to prison guards. They are made by about 100 inmates at three prisons who earn 44 cent to $1.55 an hour. Other prison industries make license plates and furniture for public agencies.

Uniforms for Washington State Patrol troopers are provided by a private company and cost $611,000 last year.
