Worker killed in fall at Vigor Industrial shipyard

A worker died in fall at a Harbor Island shipyard shortly after noon Friday.

Steve Hirsh of Vigor Industrial said the man was working on a project to add environmental upgrades to a Kulluk arctic drilling rig.

Hirsh said he did not know the man’s identity nor how long he had been with the shipyard, but believes he had been an employee of Todd Shipyard, before Vigor purchased it early last year.

“It’s a tragedy. Our people are hugely important to us,” Hirsh said. He said work at the shipyard was shut down after the accident.

Kyle Moore of the Seattle Fire Department said firefighters were told the man had been working on scaffolding, and fell 70 to 100 feet.

Moore said shipyard workers were performing CPR on the man when aid crews arrived, and that medics performed five rounds of CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on the scene by mid-afternoon.
