Bellevue man charged in hatchet slaying of wife

A first-degree  murder charge was filed this afternoon against James W. Schumacher, 71, of Bellevue, who is accused of killing his wife last week with a hatchet.

Schumacher is being held in the King County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on April 10.

Schumacher was arrested Friday after he walked into Bellevue police headquarters and said he had killed his wife, police said. Police then went to the couple’s home in the Lake Hills neighborhood of Bellevue and found her body.

Police said Schumacher killed Jean Schumacher, also 71, with a hatchet on Wednesday in her bedroom. The couple were married for 46 years.
