Couple plead not guilty in Bremerton school shooting case

The Associated Press

PORT ORCHARD — A Bremerton couple pleaded not guilty this morning to charges arising from the shooting that wounded an 8-year-old girl in a classroom.

The gun was in a backpack brought to class Feb. 22 by a 9-year-old boy and it fired when it dropped it on a desk. Third-grader Amina Kocer-Bowman was wounded and remains at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.

The boy’s mother, Jamie Lee Chaffin, was arrested during Thursday’s court appearance in Port Orchard and led away in handcuffs. She’s held on $50,000 bail because she’s a convicted felon.

Her boyfriend, Douglas L. Bauer, who has no prior record, was released without bail.

The prosecutor’s office says both are due back in Kitsap County Superior Court on March 21.

Both are charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and third-degree assault, a felony that could send them to prison for up to five years.
