Felon sentenced for shooting on Metro bus in Seattle

A 25-year-old Seattle man was sentenced today to  7 1/2 years in prison for a shooting aboard a Metro bus last May in downtown Seattle. David Dietrick, a felon with numerous criminal convictions, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Seattle for illegally possessing a firearm.

A woman was hit in the leg by a ricocheting bullet after Dietrick’s handgun accidentally discharged on May 19 when the bus was at Third Avenue and Seneca Street.  She was checked by medics at the scene, but declined treatment.

The shooting occurred aboard the Route 125 bus, which runs between South Seattle Community College, White Center and Shorewood.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, before the shooting Dietrick had gotten into an argument with someone in downtown Seattle. He went home and grabbed his gun, and returned to “settle the score,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Dietrick and his girlfriend were on the bus when he removed the gun from his waistband and placed it in his backpack. As he did so, the handgun discharged.

Dietrick is prohibited from possessing firearms because of multiple criminal convictions, including robbery, drug possession, theft and burglary. Investigators determined the gun had been stolen from the Snohomish Police Department.
