Map of crime locations goes online in Kent

Residents of Kent can view locations of recent crimes on an online  map, now that the city has joined crimereports.com.

The Kentcrimereports.com site allows users to filter the results for different types of crimes, say burglaries and car thefts, or view all crimes. Other icons can show traffic accidents, or blocks where registered sex offenders live.

By navigating out of Kent, map viewers can see crimes in Tukwila, unincorporated South King County, Renton and some other places.

Kent residents can sign up for e-alerts, and Assistant Chief Pat Lowery says officers hope the map will benefit neighborhood block watches.

Police in the city of 92,411 residents take 91,000 calls for service and generate 16,000 reports a year.
