New bus-carpool ramp on Mercer Island opens Thursday

Bus riders heading east across Mercer Island will save a few minutes Thursday afternoon, when a new carpool ramp and lane open at I-90.

Ceremonies are set for 11 a.m. , followed by a ceremonial “first bus,” at the new 80th Avenue Southeast onramp to Interstate 90. Instead of squeezing around general traffic, Sound Transit buses 550 and 554, as well as King County Metro Transit routes, will now go directly from the Mercer Island Park-and-Ride to the left-side HOV lane.

The new ramp — and a lane from there to Bellevue Way exit — mark the second phase of a $256 million project, funded mostly by Sound Transit, to add carpool lanes to the general roadway of I-90.  These lanes are to replace the I-90 express lanes, which will be eventually be taken over by Sound Transit to build the East Link rail line.

The state Department of Transportation project homepage can be found here.
