Suspect, mother sought in courthouse attack

Steven Daniel Kravetz

Investigators in Grays Harbor County released photos and a description this morning of a 34-year-old man they say is a suspect in Friday’s courthouse stabbing and shooting. They said Steven Daniel Kravetz may be in the company of his mother, identified as Roberta L. Dougherty, 58.

The Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office says they believe Kravetz called Dougherty shortly after the attack from an attorney’s office near the courthouse. She picked him up at 3 p.m. and gave him a ride, possibly to the Olympia area.  Dougherty is also known as Roberta St. George.

Grays Harbor County had earlier issued a warrant for Kravetz’s arrest for a “domestic violence situation” between 2005 and 2007, said Undersheriff Rick Scott. But investigators don’t know why he was at the courthouse Friday.

He arrived in Montesano Friday by transit bus, Scott said. After the attack, he walked to the office of an attorney he knew from his previous domestic-violence situation, Scott said.

The attorney came forward Friday afternoon to identify Kravetz. Investigators don’t know where Kravetz or his mom live, but she has an Olympia-area post office box. Scott said Kravetz has “no significant criminal history.”

Authorities said the vehicle was a silver Ford Focus with Washington plate AEX8372.

The Sheriff’s Office says Grays Harbor Superior Court Judge David Edwards was stabbed and Deputy Polly Davin was shot during the confrontation Friday with Kravetz. Davin was shot with her own handgun, the Sherff’s Department said.

He then ran from the courthouse with the handgun, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The attack touched off an exhaustive manhunt involving an estimated 100 officers from across the region and locked down the this town of 4,000. But the search failed to turn up the man, who is believed presumed to still be armed with Davin’s handgun.

Edwards, 63, and Davin, 45, survived the attack.

The suspect was described as between 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall, clean-shaven, with light-brown hair, a blue shirt, black pants.

Anyone with information on Kravetz or Dougherty is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office TIP line at 360-249-3911.

Here’s the story from today’s newspaper about the attack.
