Six hurt in overnight I-5 crash

Six people were taken to Harborview Medical Center early Sunday morning after a three-vehicle collision on I-5, the Washington State Patrol said.

The chain-reaction crash closed the two right lanes of northbound I-5 near Spokane Street, as well as the northbound on-ramps from Spokane Street and South Columbian Way, for several hours.

The accident occurred around 2:40 a.m., as a 1992 Ford Explorer attempted to merge to avoid a lane closure. The Washington State Department of Transportation had closed the three left lanes of I-5 leading up to downtown to allow for lamp-replacement work in the Convention Center underpass, a spokeswoman said Sunday.

The Explorer, which was carrying two people, collided with a Freightliner truck, which then hit a 1999 Lexus RX300 with two adults and a teenage boy inside.

The accident was not cleared until just before 7 a.m., the State Patrol said. The conditions of the six injured people were not known; the Explorer was totaled.
