Sounder commuter-train bridge ready for South Tacoma & Lakewood service this fall

It won’t be too long until Sounder commuter trains go beyond Tacoma, serving South Tacoma and Lakewood stations this fall.

Sound Transit on Monday celebrated the construction of a steel train bridge over Pacific Avenue, just southwest of Tacoma’s central train station at Freighthouse Square.

Of the nine daily round-trip trains to Seattle along the south line (two of which are “reverse” commutes), five will extend beyond Freighthouse Square and go all the way to South Tacoma and Lakewood, with a target start of Oct. 1, said transit spokeswoman Kimberly Reason. More work remains including track installation, painting, artwork, landscaping, sidewalks, and a smaller rail bridge over A Street.

The project started several years late, because the original plan for surface trackway needed to be changed to a costlier design, so that high-frequency trains to operate above other traffic.  But the agency says its $161 million construction phase from D to M Streets in central Tacoma, with MidMountain as lead contractor, is ahead of schedule.  Ridership has been growing post-recession on Sounder’s south line, which carried 2.3 million commuters and special-event passengers in 2011.
