Former sheriff’s spokesman Urquhart will run for top cop job

John Urquhart, former spokesman for the King County Sheriff’s Office, announced today he will run for sheriff in an election later this year.

Urquhart, 64, retired in September after 23 years at the sheriff’s office.  He said he met with his wife and two daughters Monday night about the decision. They could have vetoed his campaign, he said, but did not.

Former Sheriff Sue Rahr stepped down earlier this month to become executive director of the state police training academy. She designated her top deputy, Steve Strachan, to be interim sheriff.

The Metropolitan King County Council appointed Strachan to serve as sheriff until a November election decides who will fill out the rest of Rahr’s term, which concludes at the end of 2013.

Strachan has said he will seek election to the post. The filing deadline for candidates is mid-May.
