Help wanted: State Patrol hiring 60 new troopers

Want to be a trooper? There might be no better time.

The State Patrol announced this morning it is launching an “unprecedented” hiring campaign to fill 60 vacancies that will be left by retirements. The state Legislature recently provided funding for a State Patrol Academy class beginning in October, State Patrol officials announced this morning.

“What we are looking for is people with good judgment, people with integrity, people with honesty and the yearning to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” said Capt. Jeff DeVere.

The State Patrol must move fast because applicant testing will begin immediately due to the length of background checks, which include polygraphs, interviews of neighbors and employers.

Testing will be held over four days at Camp Murray  from April 28 through May 1. Applicants, who must be between the ages of 19 and 60, according to State Patrol recruiter Pete Stock.

Applicants must be able to do a certain amount of sit-ups, push ups and run a mile and a half in a certain amount of time. More information about both the written test and the physical exam may be found at the State Patrol’s recruiting web site by clicking here.

DeVere said the starting pay is about $3,800 a month, but increase to about $5,000 a month at five years.

The patrol expects to test around 2000 candidates to fill the new academy class. the 101st in the State Patrol’s history.
