Morning Memo/Monday: Superintendent chosen … gas prices fall

Weather: Let’s see, drizzle, drizzle, drizzle for the next three days, although there might be a few sun breaks tomorrow.  Temperatures in the mid-50s. Aren’t they supposed to be in the low 60s by now?
The National Weather Service forecast.

Traffic: The 520 bridge reopened as expected this morning after being closed all weekend for construction. There are reports of standing water in some places, particularly at on- and off-ramps, so be careful. The map and cams.

Seattle Schools super search: First came word over the weekend that one finalist for the Seattle Schools superintendent’s job had withdrawn. Then in a flurry this morning came the news that a second candidate had withdrawn and the third had been selected by the Seattle School Board. The choice is Jose Banda, who will be leaving a district in Anaheim, Calif., and says he’s ready to roll up his sleeves in Seattle.

Got to love this story: Man reports his car stolen because he didn’t want his friend driving. No surprise that alcohol was involved.

Another child falling out a window: We’ve said that a Seattle boy fell out of a third-story window Sunday. (He’s expected to survive.) Now we have a two-year-old boy falling from the second floor roof of an apartment building into a flower bed in Vancouver, Wash. and his  18-month-old sibling being rescued from that same roof by a teen who’s being hailed a hero. Things could have turned out a lot worse had it not been for his quick action.

Two Spokane men killed in campground: A fight at a campground in the northeast corner of the state has led to the deaths of two young men … while a group of 10 or so others watched. One man was stabbed, one was shot — apparently by each other. Again, there was alcohol involved.

Gas prices: The average price of a gallon of gas in the state has dropped two cents in one week, to $4.08, says the AAA. The average in Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area is $4.10.
