Morning Memo/Wednesday: Ghost ship poll … Guns at school … Whooping cough

Weather: Oh, chilly in some places, as in the mid to low 30s this morning. Yesterday, there was a bit of everything, rain, showers, sun and sun with rain coming down. … Well, the chance of showers is 70 percent today (it was 90 percent yesterday), but if forecasts hold true, things will get better as the week progresses, with possibly a clear, sunny day Sunday. Got to love that. The National Weather Service forecast.

The ghost ship: Oh, no, not that again … Given the nature of reader comments on the ghost ship that’s adrift not too far from the Alaska coast, we thought it might be worthwhile to give folks a chance to chime in on what ought to be done with the old vessel. Take the poll.

Whooping cough: The only thing we can say about the significant rise in whooping cough cases in this state is: Get vaccincated!

Nicole Pietz

David Pietz is scheduled to be arraigned this morning on a second-degree murder charge in the 2006 killing of his wife, Nicole, of Lynnwood. Pietz was long considered the key suspect in the case.

Guns at school: Two teens brought a gun to Kentlake High School Monday. Thank goodness nothing happened. Late last month, a 15-year-old Port Orchard boy brought a handgun to his junior high school. Luckily, nothing happened in that case either. Two days earlier, a 14-year-old Renton boy was arrested after bringing a handgun to his school. And then, of course, there’s the Bremerton case: A 9-year-old boy brought his mother’s gun to school. It went off and critically wounded 8-year-old Amina Kocer-Bowman, who left the hospital just yesterday. Finally, there’s the story of the 10-year-old Kennewick boy, who didn’t bring a gun to his elementary school but was expelled anyway in early March after administrators saw a YouTube video in which he displays several guns, real guns.
