Seattle Pacific University names new president

Daniel J. Martin, the president of a Christian liberal arts university in central Ohio, has been chosen to become the 10th president of Seattle Pacific University, succeeding Philip Eaton, who is retiring.

Martin is president of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, a 2,500-student university in Ohio. He will take over as president of SPU July 1.

“What is most inspiring and attractive perhaps, is the belief that SPU’s mission can truly change our world,” Martin said in a prepared statement. “SPU’s vision of engaging the culture and changing the world is an idea that forms the very essence of what a Christian university should be.”

Martin formerly served as executive assistant to the president, vice president for enrollment development, and acting vice president of finance at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan., and as vice president for university advancement at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.

He has a law degree, a master’s of business administration and doctorate in higher education policy and leadership from the University of Kansas, and a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.

SPU was founded in 1891, and serves more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
