Miles-long backup as semi collision closes southbound I-5

A semi tractor-trailer over turned in a collision with an automobile on I-5 just North of the interchange to I-90 in Seattle Thursday. (Jim Bates / THE SEATTLE TIMES)

Update | 4:30 p.m.: I-5 southbound reopened around 4:15 p.m., according to WSDOT.

Original post: A multiple-vehicle collision involving a semi has closed all four southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in downtown Seattle north of the I-90 exit, causing an eight-mile backup, the Washington State Patrol reports.

Traffic is being diverted onto the collector-distributor lanes. The accident was reported at 2:14 p.m.

Trooper Julie Startup said it appears a semi and a passenger car both rolled over,  and other vehicles were damaged in collisions that may have followed the initial accident.

“We don’t have a total count yet or an injury assessment,” Startup said, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
