Space Needle to get retro paint job: ‘Galaxy Gold’

The last time the Space Needle was painted "Galaxy Gold" was in 2002. (Tom Reese, The Seattle Times)

The Space Needle will get a retro paint job starting tomorrow in celebration of the Seattle icon’s 50th anniversary.

The roof will get a coat of  “galaxy gold,” the color that adorned the top of the 605-foot tower when it opened at the Worlds Fair a half  century ago.

The first strokes of the paint will be applied Tuesday by David Hughbanks, World’s Fair community relations associate, and Jeff Wright, the chairman of  the company that owns and operates the Needle and the son of the man who built the futuristic tower,  Howard S. Wright.

The anniversary celebration begins April 21.
