New BoltBus to launch Seattle-Portland nonstop route May 17

The new-generation intercity line known as BoltBus announced Monday that it will launch a Seattle-to-Portland nonstop route May 17.

Fares vary from $1 to around $25 to $27, based on demand and distance, a ticket agent said. Generally speaking, riders save money the earlier they buy a ticket, at BoltBus.com or by phone at 877-265-8287.  Buses leave at 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m. and are scheduled to reach Portland in 3 hours, 15 minutes, the online schedule says.  Pickup in Seattle is on the curbside of Fifth Avenue South, next to International District/Chinatown Station.

Dallas-based BoltBus began serving East Coast destinations in 2008, and this is its first West Coast line, to be operated by Greyhound. The black-and-orange buses have fewer seats to allow more legroom than a traditional bus, and are equipped with Wi-Fi, the company says.

On the East Coast, the new-generation intercity buses are competing against Amtrak for passengers, according to this story by The Washington Post.  Here in the Northwest, historic King Street Station is being renovated, while the federal government is spending more than $700 million to improve travel times and service on the growing Amtrak Cascades line, and freight trains.
