The driver told police that he picked up three men in Skyway around 11:30 p.m. and once they reached their destination, 36th Avenue South and South Oregon Street, one man told the driver to wait while he went to collect the $40 fare from a nearby apartment. Suspicious, the driver said he would walk with the man to get the money, according to police.

Once they walked into an apartment the passenger pulled the hood of his sweatshirt over his head and turned toward the driver, according to police. He ordered the driver to stay where he was, when the driver protested the passenger pulled a knife out of his pocket, police said. The other two men who had been in the cab, by this point, had disappeared.

The driver then dialed 911 on his cell phone, as he was speaking to the 911 operator, the passenger in the apartment took off. Police quickly arrived and located a man matching the description of the man who took off walking west on South Genesee Street, across 37th Avenue South. Officers detained and questioned the man; the driver identified him to police.

After his arrest, the suspect told police he had been returning to the area to pay the driver. Police said the man had no money on him when he was arrested. The 31-year-old man was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of robbery.
