A man who reported his car stolen – only to be found, soon after, in the car’s passenger seat – was “highly intoxicated” when he dialed 911 just after midnight Saturday and set in motion events that would get both him and his buddy arrested, according to Seattle police.

The man — or “victim,” as a Seattle Police Department release refers to him (the SPD’s quotation marks, not ours) — called 911 at about 12:04 a.m. to say someone had stolen his 2009 Audi. The “victim” even assisted with the chase, saying the thief had driven away on Swift Avenue South, heading North, according to the release.

Police responded to the area and quickly found the Audi – along with the car’s owner (also known as the “victim,” also known as the 911 caller), sitting in the passenger seat.

Police discovered that the owner had reported his car stolen because he did not want his buddy, whom he believed to be inebriated, driving the Audi.

How reporting the car stolen would prevent his friend from taking the wheel is not clear.

But the “victim” was right about his buddy’s  condition, according to Seattle police.

The 911 caller was arrested on suspicion of making a false police report. The 911 caller’s buddy was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
