Tukwila teen pleads not guilty to killing girl

From The Associated Press and Times archives:

KENT — A 17-year-old boy accused of stabbing a 17-year-old girl to death in Tukwila pleaded not guilty this morning in King County Superior Court in Kent to a second-degree murder charge.

Kolby Clark of Tukwila is being prosecuted as an adult. He’ll face up to 20 years in prison if convicted in the March 17 death of Jasmyn Tully of SeaTac.

Clark told police he’d “felt an overpowering urge to hurt someone,” so he armed himself with a knife and attacked the sleeping girl, according to charges filed in King County Superior Court.

While Clark’s uncle told The Times that his nephew had smoked synthetic marijuana on March 17 and blacked out, Tukwila police Detective Ron Corrigan said that when investigators spoke with Clark after the slaying, he “did not show signs of being intoxicated and gave a fabricated story that was extremely complex and well thought out.”

“He was very articulate and well-spoken … no officer or detective thought him intoxicated,” Corrigan wrote in his report.

Police said that victim Tully was visiting a friend at an apartment in Tukwila when she was attacked by Clark, who was staying at the same apartment.
