Two Coast Guard members shot dead in Kodiak, Alaska

Two members of the Coast Guard’s communication station at Kodiak, Alaska, have been found shot to death, the Coast Guard said in a news release this afternoon.

“It is possible that the suspect remains at large,” Capt. Jesse Moore, commanding officer, Coast Guard Base Support Unit Kodiak says in the release. “Since we don’t have all the details, we strongly advise that all Kodiak residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement officials.”

The base and local schools were in lockdown until authorities could be sure there was no longer a threat to anyone’s safety.

The Coast Guard is working with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to investigate the shootings.

“We are deeply saddened that we lost two shipmates,” said Moore. “This is a rare occurrence and we are going to do everything possible to ensure we find out exactly what happened.”

The names of the deceased have not been released.
