Woman pleads not guilty to North Seattle homicide

A woman accused of fatally stabbing a man outside a North Seattle doughnut shop earlier this month pleaded not guilty this morning to a charge of second-degree murder, according to the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

Seattle police say Karen Latham, 23,  killed 54-year-old Zerabruk Hebtemariam in the parking lot at North 125th Street and Aurora Avenue North on April 2.

In court documents, police say Hebtemariam apparently stopped his car when a woman flagged him down on Aurora Avenue North. He gave her a ride to a fast-food restaurant that shares a parking lot with the doughnut shop.

Police say he also gave the woman $5 when she asked for money, but refused to give her more, even when she pulled out a knife. Prosecutors allege the woman fatally stabbed him in the chest and fled.

Witnesses led police to a nearby hotel where the bloody woman was found.

Latham is being held in the King County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail. If convicted as charged, Latham faces a sentence of 147 to 244 months in prison.
