1 dead, 2 rescued after boat overturns near Sucia Is.

One person died and two were rescued Friday afternoon when a boat capsized in the San Juan Islands.

The accident happened a few hundred yards west of Sucia Island, which is north of Orcas Island near the U.S.-Canada border.

People aboard the boat were reaching to retrieve a stuck crab pot from the water, when the vessel flipped shortly before 3 p.m., said Eric Cookson, command duty officer for the U.S. Coast Guard in Seattle.

Another boater pulled the three victims, all male, out of the water, said Cookson. Coast Guard and San Juan County Sheriff’s medics tried CPR but couldn’t save one of them. He and the two others, who both suffered hypothermia, were being taken to Friday Harbor on a sheriff’s boat. The Canadian Coast Guard, and a doctor aboard another nearby vessel, also assisted

All three people on the boat were wearing life jackets, which probably prevented the accident from being even worse, a Coast Guard officer said.

Efforts are under way to retrieve the vessel, the size and type of which are unconfirmed.
