Kent mail thieves busted after high-speed chase

Two men suspected of stealing mail in Kent were arrested early this morning following a high-speed chase.

Shortly before 4 a.m., a Kent police sergeant spotted the suspects’  Honda sedan parked alongside  mailboxes in an industrial park in the city’s north end. As the officer approached, the suspects’ Honda headed toward his patrol car, and then drove onto the West Valley Highway, according to a Kent police news release. The officer caught up with the Honda and followed it onto southbound Highway 167.

Once on the Valley Freeway, the suspects’ car accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph. The driver, identified as a  20-year-old Federal Way man, lost control of his car while trying to navigate an exit ramp at Highway 18 in Auburn. The driver was able to regain control.

Police then maneuvered their patrol car next to the suspects’ Honda and initiated a Pursuit Immobilization Technique – or PIT — maneuver, forcing the Honda against a concrete barrier. The driver and passenger, a 42-year-old Seattle man, were taken into custody. Police recovered stolen mail from their car and returned it to the victims, according to the news release.

Both men were booked for investigation of theft and the driver also faces charges related to his effort to elude police as well as possession of narcotics, police said.
