Lewis-McChord soldier killed in Afghanistan

A 25-year-old soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord died Wednesday from wounds he received in a bomb attack in Afghanistan.

The soldier, 2nd Lt. Travis Morgado, served with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry division. He is the fourth soldier from that brigade to die during a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan that began in December, according to a Lewis-McChord official.

Morgado, of San Jose, Calif., was on patrol in the Zharay District of southern Afghanistan at the time of the bomb attack. He was assigned to the brigade’s 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment.

Morgado joined the Army in November 2010, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in May 2011.

Morgado’s awards and decorations include National Defense Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, and Ranger Tab
